Ranforce vs Sateen vs Percale: Which Cotton Fabric for Bed Linen?

All three are cotton, and all three can make good bed linen. The difference is in the weave — how the threads cross each other — and that changes how the fabric feels, how it looks, how long it lasts and how it behaves in the laundry. For a hotel, a holiday rental or a shop, choosing the right one matters more than any single number on the label.

The short answer: ranforce is the durable, affordable everyday choice; percale is crisp, cool and classic for hotels; sateen is smooth and silky, with a soft sheen, for a more luxurious feel.

Ranforce

Ranforce is a plain-weave cotton fabric made with slightly thicker yarns than percale. It is the most common bed linen fabric in Turkey and is widely used across Europe — in Germany it is known as Renforcé.

Because the weave is simple and tight, ranforce is strong, holds its shape and tolerates frequent washing well. Its matte surface takes prints beautifully, which is why most printed bed linen sets — florals, checks, abstract designs — are made of ranforce. It is also more affordable than percale or sateen at a similar quality level.

Choose ranforce for: holiday rentals, guesthouses, mid-range hotels and retail collections with printed designs.

Percale

Percale is also a plain weave, but made with finer, usually combed cotton yarns woven more densely. The result is a crisp, cool, matte fabric that many people associate with hotel beds — it feels fresh and breathable, especially for those who sleep warm.

Percale is very durable and handles industrial laundry well. Its main drawback is that it creases more easily than sateen.

Choose percale for: hotels that want the classic “crisp hotel sheet” feel, warm climates and guests who prefer a cool bed.

Sateen

Sateen uses a satin weave: several threads pass over one thread before going under. This puts more yarn on the surface, which makes the fabric smooth and silky with a soft sheen. In Germany, fine cotton sateen is often sold as Mako-Satin.

Sateen drapes well and feels slightly warmer than percale. Because the surface threads are longer, it is a little more prone to snags and pilling, and it keeps its sheen best with gentler washing.

A related fabric is satin stripe — sateen with woven tone-on-tone stripes, a classic for white hotel bed linen.

Choose sateen for: boutique and luxury hotels, premium retail collections and buyers who want a smooth, silky feel.

What thread count really tells you

Thread count is the number of threads in a square inch of fabric. It is useful for comparing fabrics of the same type, but it is not a quality score on its own: a well-made ranforce can outlast a cheap high-thread-count sateen. Yarn quality, the weave and the finishing matter just as much.

As a rough guide, percale usually starts at around 180 threads per square inch, and sateen is often 300 or more. Ranforce is typically lower — its strength comes from thicker yarns, not from a high count.

Which fabric for hotels, rentals and retail?

  • Holiday rentals and guesthouses: ranforce — durable, easy to wash and affordable to replace.
  • Hotels with industrial laundry: percale or ranforce; sateen if you want a premium feel and can wash it more gently.
  • Retail: ranforce for printed everyday sets, sateen for a premium line.
